Har Ki Pauri, translating to Steps of Lord Shiva, is the most sacred ghat on the banks of River Ganga in Haridwar. Built in the 1st century BC by King Vikramaditya in memory of his brother Bhartrihari, this spiritual epicenter is considered the exact spot where the celestial river enters the northern plains of Uttarakhand.
The central sanctum sanctorum within the ghat is known as Brahmakund, where divine drops of celestial nectar (Amrit) fell during the mythical churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). An ancient stone wall bears an imprint revered by devotees as the authentic footprint of Lord Vishnu.
Every evening at twilight, thousands of devotees assemble along the tiers of Brahmakund to witness the world famous Maha Aarti. As temple priests rotate towering multi tiered brass oil lamps accompanied by ringing bells and Sanskrit chants, thousands of floating floral diyas illuminate the flowing river current.
To secure a good seating spot on the steps across the clock tower, arrive at least 45 minutes prior to aarti time. Devotees can buy flower baskets with cotton wick lamps from registered stalls.
