Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple is an ancient rock shrine tucked at the foothills of the Bilwa Parvat hills near Haridwar. Surrounded by dense woods of bael (bilva) trees and natural forest cover, this sacred temple holds profound mythical importance in Uttarakhand.
According to regional Hindu mythology from the Shiva Purana, this is the sanctified spot where Goddess Parvati performed rigorous tapasya (penance) for thousands of years to marry Lord Shiva, surviving solely on fallen bael leaves and water. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared here and accepted her as his consort.
The temple complex enshrines a stone Shiva lingam along with shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Hanuman. Set amidst lush green foliage near the railway line, it provides a quiet refuge for solitary meditation away from the bustling ghats.
Devotees offer fresh bael leaves (Bilva patra) and holy Ganga jal to the deity. A small perennial freshwater stream flows nearby, adding to the serene, natural woodland atmosphere.
