Daksha Mahadev Temple, locally known as Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, is an ancient sacred shrine situated in the heritage pilgrimage township of Kankhal near Haridwar. Built on the historic site of King Daksha Prajapati Vedic sacrifice, this temple is one of the most prominent Shiva pilgrimage centers in Uttarakhand.
According to the Shiva Purana and Mahabharata, King Daksha organized the legendary Brihaspatisava Yagna here, deliberately refusing to invite Lord Shiva. Deeply distressed by her father insults toward her divine consort, Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire pit.
The temple complex includes the ancient Yagna Kund pit, the historic Sati Kund where Goddess Sati gave up her life, and the sacred Dash Mahavidya temple. Rebuilt in 1810 by Queen Dhankaur and updated in 1963 by the Mahanirvani Akhada, it draws millions of Shiva devotees every year.
During the holy month of Shravan, Lord Shiva is believed to reside in Kankhal, making darshan especially auspicious. Pilgrims take holy dips at adjacent Daksha Ghat on the Neel Dhara Ganga canal.
