Gau Ghat

Gau Ghat is a sacred riverbank bathing ghat situated on the banks of River Ganga in Haridwar. Revering the cow (Gau) as a holy mother symbol in Hindu Sanatana tradition, bathing at this ghat is believed to offer spiritual absolution from the sin of cow slaughter (Go Hatya) and grant divine peace to departed souls in Uttarakhand.

Historical significance also surrounds Gau Ghat, as the mortal ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi were immersed in the holy flowing waters here following their demise. A commemorative marble pillar and platform honor these national leaders near the bathing steps.

The ghat is less crowded compared to Har Ki Pauri, making it an ideal peaceful location for performing Shraddha ceremonies, Pind Daan, and ritualistic tarpan offerings under the guidance of traditional Ganga tirth purohits.

Rituals & Ghat Practical Info

Pilgrims gather at dawn to offer earthen oil lamps (diyas) and fresh marigold flowers to Mother Ganga. The gentle stone steps and sturdy safety chains allow safe holy bathing in the river currents.
