Virbhadra Temple is an ancient 1,300 year old religious sanctuary situated in the southern outskirts of Rishikesh. Dedicated to Lord Virbhadra, the fierce martial incarnation spawned from the matted hair of Lord Shiva, this historical temple is steeped in Puranic lore in Uttarakhand.
According to the Shiva Purana, when Lord Shiva heard of Goddess Sati self immolation at King Daksha sacrificial pyre in Kankhal, in fury he plucked a lock of his hair and thrashed it against the ground. From it arose the warrior god Virbhadra and fierce Bhadrakali to destroy the sacrifice.
The temple houses a rare stone idol of Lord Virbhadra depicted in full warrior armor alongside sacred Shiva lingams and Goddess Bhadrakali shrines. The tranquil temple grove is enveloped by aged peepal, banyan, and neem trees near the Virbhadra Barrage reservoir.
A grand annual fair (Mela) takes place here during Maha Shivratri, drawing thousands of devotees from Garhwal villages. The adjoining Virbhadra railway station and Pashulok canal offer scenic countryside walks.

Virbhadra Temple is located in Virbhadra township near AIIMS Rishikesh, about 5 kilometers south of Triveni Ghat.
Virbhadra Temple can be visited throughout the year, with special devotion observed on Shivratri and monsoon Mondays.
