About Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a sacred mountain shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva situated at an altitude of 1,330 meters in the Pauri Garhwal hills above Rishikesh. Encircled by the towering mountain peaks of Brahmakoot, Manikoot, and Vishnukoot, this revered pilgrimage center is steeped in cosmic Hindu legend in Uttarakhand.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple Rishikesh

According to Puranic tradition, during the mythical churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), deadly Halahala poison emerged that threatened to destroy all creation. Lord Shiva selflessly drank the venom and meditated at this exact spot for thousands of years. The venom turned his throat blue, earning him the sacred epithet Neelkanth (The Blue Throated One).

The temple architecture features colorful sculpted friezes above the entrance depicting the entire churning of the cosmic ocean by gods and demons. A natural cold water spring fills a stepped pool where devotees bathe before entering the inner sanctum to offer holy water and bael leaves to the Shiva lingam.

Pilgrimage Highlights & Practical Details

Devotees can hike up a 14 kilometer mountain trail through dense forest or hire shared mountain jeeps from Ram Jhula taxi stand. A sacred Peepal tree on the temple complex is tied with holy threads by wish seeking pilgrims.
