Bharat Mandir is the oldest and most historically significant temple in the pilgrimage town of Rishikesh. Founded in the 9th century AD by Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya on Basant Panchami, this sacred Vishnu shrine marks the original historical foundation around which the entire settlement of Rishikesh evolved in Uttarakhand.
Contrary to popular assumption, the temple is dedicated not to Lord Rama brother Bharata, but to Lord Hrishikesh Narayana (Lord Vishnu). The inner sanctum houses an ancient single piece black Saligram stone murti of Lord Vishnu holding the conch, discus, mace, and lotus.
Ancient archaeological excavations within the temple courtyard have unearthed rare statues, pottery, and coins dating back to the 2nd to 11th century Maurya and Kushan eras, currently exhibited at the temple museum. A sacred ancient banyan tree with interlocking roots of three holy species stands gracefully outside.
Completing 108 parikramas (circumambulations) around the deity on Basant Panchami is believed to equal the religious merit of visiting Badrinath. The quiet inner stone courtyards provide deep meditative solitude.
