Lakshman Jhula is the world renowned 450 foot long iron suspension bridge suspended across the roaring waters of River Ganga in Rishikesh. Built in 1929 by the British administration to replace an ancient jute rope bridge, this iconic landmark connects Tehri Garhwal on the west with Pauri Garhwal on the east in Uttarakhand.
According to regional Hindu legend from the Ramayana, Lord Rama younger brother Lakshmana crossed the raging waters of the Ganges at this exact spot using only two jute ropes. To commemorate his heroic feat, an ancient bridge of jute ropes was maintained for centuries before the permanent steel structure was engineered.
Surrounding the bridge are lively bohemian cafes, yoga schools, and spiritual multi storey shrines including the famous 13 storey Tera Manzil Temple. The bridge delivers spellbinding views of emerald river rapids and distant Himalayan ridges.
While the historic bridge has been retired from active heavy traffic for structural conservation, the adjoining new glass floor suspension bridge (Bajrang Setu) provides visitors an equally striking aerial walking experience.
