Rajaji National Park is a prominent tiger reserve and elephant habitat sprawling across 820 square kilometers along the Shivalik mountain ranges and Indo Gangetic plains. Formed in 1983 by merging the Chilla, Motichur, and Rajaji sanctuaries, it was named in honor of prominent freedom leader C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji).
The park represents the northwestern ecological limit for wild Asian elephants and Bengal tigers in India. Its diverse ecosystem encompasses dense sal forests, riverine grasslands, broadleaf woodlands, and the sacred Ganga River meandering across its core expanse.
The reserve is home to over 500 wild Asian elephants that migrate freely along the Shivalik corridor between Corbett and Rajaji. Healthy populations of Royal Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, spotted deer, barking deer, and wild boars thrive across the reserve.
Jeep safaris operate primarily from the Chilla Gate (just 18 kilometers from Rishikesh and Haridwar) across a 36 kilometer designated jungle track. Birders can observe over 400 avian species including the great pied hornbill, crested kingfisher, osprey, and yellow footed green pigeon.
