Beatles Ashram (officially known as Chaurasi Kutia or Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram), built on a dramatic cliff 150 feet above the holy River Ganga in the Swargashram forest fringe of Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, is one of the world's most legendary cultural, musical, and spiritual pilgrimage landmarks.
Established in 1961 by Transcendental Meditation pioneer Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on 14 acres of Rajaji forest land, this mythical ashram achieved global renown in early 1968 when John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr traveled to Rishikesh for meditation, sparking the most prolific songwriting period in rock music history.
It's the home of 84 igloo shaped river pebble meditation caves (Chaurasi Kutia) built to represent the 84 yogic postures, the colorful Beatles Cathedral hall decorated with psychedelic graffiti murals and song lyrics, the historic Ved Bhavan lecture halls, Maharishi's cliffside bungalow, and tranquil forest trails overlooking the emerald waters of the Ganges.
It represents a rich sanctuary where 1960s counter culture music history, ancient Vedic meditation practices, wild Himalayan jungle biodiversity, and creative global street art unite in the Yoga Capital of the World.
Located in Swargashram just 3 km from Ram Jhula and 4 km from Lakshman Jhula, it sits 14 km from Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station (YNRK) and 32 km from Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED), easily accessible on foot, by rented two wheeler, or by local auto rickshaw.
In February 1968, The Beatles arrived in Rishikesh along with Mia Farrow, Donovan, and Mike Love to study Transcendental Meditation away from relentless global media attention.
Inspired by morning yoga, vegetarian meals, and sitar practice under the canopy of sal and teak trees, the Fab Four composed 48 timeless songs, including nearly the entire repertoire of The White Album ("Dear Prudence", "Blackbird", "Mother Nature's Son", and "Back in the U.S.S.R.").
Truth is, John Lennon wrote "Dear Prudence" right outside one of these stone kutias to coax Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence, out of her intensive meditation cave to enjoy the sunny Rishikesh afternoon.
The signature stone structure of the complex is the double row of 84 igloo shaped stone meditation caves, crafted from local river cobblestones and reinforced cement.
Each two tier kutia features a cool subterranean meditation chamber connected by spiral stone staircases to an upper viewing roof terrace designed for personal contemplation amid the whispering forest breezes.
The Beatles Cathedral: The former Satsang assembly hall has been transformed by international street artists into an open air art gallery, featuring giant spray painted portraits of John, Paul, George, and Ringo alongside Maharishi and Hindu deities.
Rajaji Forest Eco Park: Reopened by the Uttarakhand Forest Department on December 8, 2015, the ashram features an informative photo museum displaying rare 1968 archival photographs, a relaxed nature cafe, and elevated wooden viewing decks overlooking the Ganga gorge.
After exploring the Beatles Ashram, walk down to witness the evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan, cross the historic suspension bridge of Ram Jhula, or experience white water river rafting along the rapids of the Ganges.
Reaching the Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) is easy from all parts of Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.
