Raj Bhawan, widely known as the Governor's House, is a grand Victorian Gothic manor perched at an altitude of 1,932 meters in Nainital. Built between 1897 and 1899 as the summer residence of the British Governor of the North Western Provinces, it serves today as the official seasonal residence of the Governor of Uttarakhand.
Designed by British architect F.W. Stevens, the two story stone palace is fashioned in the Scottish baronial style, closely modeled after Buckingham Palace in London. The estate spreads over 220 acres of deodar, oak, and pine woods, featuring 113 opulent rooms, grand swimming pools, and manicured lawns.
The palace facade is built with local dark ashlar stone, decorated with Gothic arched doorways, stained glass windows, carved wooden ceilings, and brass chandeliers. Guided public tours take visitors through the historic ballroom, dining halls, and state reception suites.
The estate also features an iconic 18 hole vintage golf course laid out in 1926, which is affiliated with the Indian Golf Union. The rolling green fairways surrounded by ancient oak forests make it one of the most scenic golf courses in India.
