About Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage shrine situated gracefully at the northern shore (Mallital) of Naini Lake in Nainital. Rebuilt after the historic landslide of 1880, this revered temple is celebrated as one of the 51 miraculous Shakti Peethas in Hinduism.

According to ancient Puranic mythology, when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of destruction (Tandava) carrying the charred body of Goddess Sati, Lord Vishnu severed her corpse with his Sudarshana Chakra. Sati's eyes (nayan) fell at this exact mountain hollow, forming the sacred eye shaped lake and sanctifying the temple.
