Naini Lake is a natural freshwater crescent shaped body of water resting at the center of the hill settlement of Nainital. Surrounded by seven verdant hills including Ayarpatta, Naina, and Sher Ka Danda, the lake reflects shimmering emerald greens and bright blue skies throughout the day.
According to Hindu myth, the lake formed where the left eye (Nain) of Goddess Sati fell while Lord Shiva carried her charred body. The water body is divided naturally into two basins: Mallital at the northern head and Tallital at the southern base, both connected by the bustling Mall Road promenade in Uttarakhand.
Colorful wooden rowboats, self pedaled swan boats, and traditional Nainital Yacht Club sailboats glide across the rippling surface. Walking the perimeter path at dusk when lakeside lamps cast golden reflections is an unforgettable hill station ritual.
Visitors can hire registered rowboats with experienced local boatmen or rent pedal boats from Tallital and Mallital jetties. Nainital Yacht Club also operates scenic sailing yachts for members and licensed guests.
