Nainital Zoo

Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo, popularly known as Nainital Zoo, is a specialized high elevation zoological park perched at an altitude of 2,100 meters on Sher ka Danda hill. Established in 1984 and opened to the public in 1995, it is one of only three high altitude zoos in India alongside Darjeeling and Shimla.

The zoo spans across 4.6 hectares of steep, oak forested hillside. It was designed specifically to conserve, breed, and rescue endangered Himalayan fauna and mountain bird species indigenous to the alpine zones of the Central Himalayas.

Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, and Himalayan Fauna

The zoo is home to several rare and endangered wildlife species, including the elusive snow leopard, charming red pandas, Royal Bengal tigers, Himalayan black bears, Tibetan wolves, goral, barking deer, and sambar.

Avian aviaries house colorful Himalayan birds such as the lady Amherst pheasant, kalij pheasant, golden pheasant, cheer pheasant, and steppe eagle. Clean stone paved pathways wind uphill between spacious natural enclosures equipped with wooden viewing galleries.

Situated just 2 kilometers uphill from Tallital in Nainital, this zoo offers an exceptional wildlife education experience across Uttarakhand.
