Kilbury

Kilbury, part of the Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary, is a premier birding and temperate forest reserve located at an elevation of 2,528 meters in the Kumaon Himalayas. Situated roughly 12 kilometers from Nainital along the forested Kilbury road, it forms one of the richest avian habitats in India.

The reserve is cloaked in ancient, undisturbed forests of banj oak, moru oak, brown oak, rhododendron, and Himalayan cypress. The high altitude and dense tree canopy create an idyllic microclimate supporting rare flora and indigenous wildlife.

Kilbury and neighboring Pangot are globally acclaimed as a birdwatcher's paradise, sheltering over 580 recorded bird species. Birders flock here to spot cheer pheasants, koklass pheasants, laughingthrushes, brown wood owls, blue winged minlas, and rufous bellied woodpeckers.

The forest trail passes the historic colonial Kilbury Forest Rest House, offering unobstructed panoramic views of the Greater Himalayas, including Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli peaks. Peaceful hiking paths connect Kilbury to Pangot village and China Peak.
