Vyas Gufa (Vyas Cave) is an ancient and revered rock hermitage perched at an elevation of 3,219 meters (10,560 feet) in Mana Village in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Situated just 3 km beyond the sacred Badrinath Temple, this natural cavern is celebrated across India as the sacred hermitage where the great sage Maharishi Krishna Dwaipayana Ved Vyas composed the colossal epic Mahabharata, classified the four Vedas (Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva), and compiled the 18 Puranas and the Brahma Sutras.
A striking geological feature of the cave is its layered rock ceiling, which closely resembles stacked pages of an ancient palm leaf manuscript; local lore reveres this rock formation as the 'Vyas Pothi' (the petrified manuscript of Vyasa's writings). Inside the cave sits an ancient black stone idol of Maharishi Ved Vyas in a teaching posture. Pilgrims and spiritual seekers visiting Badrinath ascend the stone village steps to meditate inside the calm rock chamber, receive blessed sacred ash from resident sadhus, and gaze out over the deep gorge of the roaring Saraswati River.
Vyas Gufa is located in Mana Village, easily reached on foot from the village entry gate.
