Bhim Pul is an impressive natural stone bridge spanning a sheer vertical rock chasm above the roaring, frothing currents of the holy Saraswati River in Mana Village at an elevation of 3,219 meters (10,560 feet) in Uttarakhand. Located roughly 3 km north of Badrinath Temple, this massive monolithic boulder is a natural bridge across the deafening canyon where the Saraswati River cascades violently through narrow granite cliffs before merging into the Alaknanda River at Keshav Prayag.
According to the Mahabharata epic, when the five Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi were walking the Swargarohini trail toward heaven, Draupadi was unable to cross the roaring, impassable chasm of the Saraswati River; the mighty warrior Bhima broke off a colossal rock mountain slab and hurled it across the gorge to create a safe bridge for her. A 20 foot deep footprint on the adjacent stone wall is revered by locals as Bhima's footprint. Travelers visiting Badrinath cross the ancient stone bridge, marvel at the thunderous sound of the disappearing river, and start their 5 km mountain hike toward the sacred Vasudhara Falls.
Bhim Pul is situated on the northern edge of Mana Village, reachable on foot from the village entrance.
The best months to visit Bhim Pul are from May to October when Mana Village and Badrinath are open for tourism.
