Tapt Kund is a sacred natural geothermal sulfur spring situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River directly below the entrance steps of the Badrinath Temple at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) in Uttarakhand. Flowing continuously at an extraordinary natural temperature of roughly 45°C (113°F) despite being surrounded by freezing Himalayan snowfields, this holy thermal pool holds profound religious and medicinal significance on the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
Regarded in Hindu scripture as the celestial abode of Lord Agni (the Fire God), it is believed that taking a holy dip in the natural sulfur rich waters washes away sins and cures skin conditions, fatigue, and muscular aches caused by high altitude travel. The pool complex features separated enclosed bathing sections for male and female pilgrims, alongside the holy Surya Kund and Narad Kund below. Taking a sacred bath in Tapt Kund is considered the essential preparatory ritual before ascending the stone steps to offer prayers to Lord Badrivishal.
