Narad Kund is a holy natural thermal spring and sacred river water recess situated along the rocky banks of the Alaknanda River at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) in Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Perched just below the steaming Tapt Kund thermal bathing pools and beneath the overhanging stone ledge of Narad Shila, this revered water reservoir holds immense spiritual and historical prominence in Hindu heritage.
According to historical and religious texts, the divine celestial sage Narada Muni composed the revered Narada Bhakti Sutras and performed deep penance here. Most famously, in the 8th century AD, the great philosopher saint Adi Guru Shankaracharya retrieved the sacred four armed Shaligram stone idol of Lord Badrivishal from the deep swirling waters of Narad Kund (where it had been hidden by priests to protect it from invaders) and re enshrined it inside the sanctum of Badrinath Temple. Pilgrims and devotees visiting Badrinath perform ritual cleansing and offer prayers at this holy pool before ascending the stone steps to enter the temple for darshan.
