Mata Murti Temple is a sacred and historic riverbank shrine situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) along the gushing waters of the Alaknanda River in Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Perched approximately 3 km upstream from the main Badrinath Temple on the scenic trail toward Mana Village, this peaceful temple is consecrated to Mata Murti, the revered mother of the twin divine sages Nar and Narayana (incarnations of Lord Vishnu).
According to Puranic tradition, Mata Murti performed severe tapasya (penance) and prayed to Lord Vishnu to be born from her womb for the destruction of the demon Sahasrakavacha and the welfare of humanity; pleased by her steadfast devotion, the Lord incarnated as Nar and Narayana. Every year in September (on Vamana Dwadashi), a grand annual festival known as the Mata Murti Mela is celebrated: the ceremonial Utsav Murti of Lord Badrivishal is carried in a vibrant palanquin procession from Badrinath Temple to visit his mother's shrine. Pilgrims visiting Badrinath come here to seek maternal blessings for fertility, family welfare, and release from worldly illusions.
