Brahma Kapal is a sacred flat stone platform and revered ancestral riverbank ghat situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) along the bank of the Alaknanda River in Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Located approximately 100 meters north of the main Badrinath Temple, this holy stone terrace is regarded in Hindu scriptures as the supreme and most auspicious site on earth for performing Shraddha, Pinda Daan, and Tarpan rituals for deceased ancestors.
According to ancient Puranic lore, when Lord Shiva severed the arrogant fifth head of Lord Brahma, the skull (Kapala) remained stuck to Shiva's hand due to the cosmic sin of Brahmahatya; when Shiva arrived in Badrikashram, the skull miraculously detached and fell onto this river rock, liberating Shiva from sin. It is universally believed that performing Pinda Daan once at Brahma Kapal grants permanent salvation (Moksha) to eight generations of departed ancestors, eliminating the need for any subsequent funeral rites anywhere in the world. Pilgrims traveling to Badrinath gather along the stone ghats in the early morning to perform sacred Vedic ancestral ceremonies guided by the traditional Teerth Purohits of Badrinath.
Brahma Kapal is located just 100 meters north of Badrinath Temple along the Alaknanda River.
