Badrinath Temple (Badrivishal) is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage shrines in India, situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) along the bank of the Alaknanda River in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Revered as one of the four cardinal Char Dham pilgrimage centers established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya, and the primary shrine among the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, the temple is framed between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges with the pyramid peak of Mount Nilkantha rising behind it.
According to tradition, Lord Vishnu meditated here in severe Himalayan cold while Goddess Lakshmi transformed into a wild berry tree (Badri/jujube) to shelter him from the elements, naming the abode Badrikashram. The iconic stone temple features a brightly colored facade, a conical shikhara, and a gilded roof cupola. The inner sanctum houses a 1 meter tall, self manifested (swayambhu) meditative deity of Lord Vishnu carved from black Shaligram stone. Devotees visiting Badrinath take a ritual bath in the geothermal Tapt Kund, attend the sacred Maha Abhishek and evening aartis conducted by the traditional Nambudiri Brahmin chief priest (Rawal), and offer prayers for ultimate spiritual liberation (Moksha).
Badrinath Temple is situated at the terminal stretch of National Highway 07 in Chamoli district.
The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (late April/early May) and closes on Vijaya Dashami/Bhai Dooj (late October/early November).
