Charanpaduka (Charan Paduka) is a sacred high altitude rock slab built on the grassy slopes of Mount Narayan at an elevation of 3,380 meters (11,090 feet) above sea level in Badrinath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Situated roughly 3 km uphill from the Badrinath Temple, this holy stone shrine preserves the revered divine footprints (charan chinha) of Lord Vishnu, embedded into a natural granite boulder.
According to ancient Hindu belief and Bhagavata Purana lore, when Lord Krishna and Lord Vishnu set foot on the mortal earth in Badrikashram from Vaikuntha, his holy feet first touched this exact mountain rock. The rewarding 3 km uphill hiking trail starts from the back of the Badrinath Temple, ascending through vibrant alpine wildflower meadows, rushing glacial rills, and rocky ridges. Pilgrims and nature lovers visiting Badrinath hike to Charanpaduka to touch and worship the sacred footprints, seek relief from physical ailments and spiritual sins, and marvel at the jaw dropping close up panorama of Mount Nilkantha (6,596 m), the Rishi Ganga waterfall, and the sprawling Badrinath valley below.
