Ganesh Gufa (Ganesha Cave) is an ancient and holy rock hewn cavern located in Mana Village at an elevation of 3,219 meters (10,560 feet) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Perched along the gushing waters of the Saraswati River just 3 km beyond Badrinath Dham, this sacred natural cave holds deep mythological importance in Hindu literature as the exact sanctuary where Lord Ganesha wrote down the epic Mahabharata as dictated by sage Maharishi Ved Vyas.
According to ancient tradition, Lord Ganesha accepted Ved Vyas's request to transcribe the monumental 100,000 verse epic on the condition that Vyas recited continuously without pausing; when Ganesha's stylus broke during the writing, the elephant headed deity broke his own tusk to continue transcribing without interruption. Located just a short walk below Vyas Gufa, the cave houses a revered idol of Lord Ganesha decorated with vermilion. Pilgrims and scholars visiting Badrinath visit the cave to seek divine blessings for wisdom, learning, intellect, and the removal of obstacles before exploring the nearby Bhim Pul and Saraswati river gorge.
