Sheshnetra (Sheshnetre) is a sacred geological and mythological landmark situated on the slopes of the Narayana mountain range at an elevation of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) in Uttarakhand. Located approximately 1.5 km before Badrinath Temple on the road from Joshimath, this revered site features a massive natural rock face bearing a distinct, natural eye shaped formation that resembles the watchful eye of the cosmic serpent Ananta Shesha (the celestial thousand headed serpent couch of Lord Vishnu).
According to Puranic tradition, Lord Vishnu retreated to Badrikashram to perform penance, while his celestial mount Sheshanaga manifested his divine eye upon this granite mountain wall to guard and protect the Lord's sacred meditation abode. Directly beneath the eye formation sits the tranquil Sheshnetra Lake, where clear mountain waters mirror the surrounding peaks. Pilgrims arriving in Badrinath halt at the roadside viewing point to gaze at the natural eye imprint, pay respects to the divine protector, and admire sweeping vistas of Mount Nilkantha and the Alaknanda riverbed.
Sheshnetra is located 1.5 km before Badrinath town along National Highway 07.
