Tapkeshwar Temple, also known as Tapkeshwar Mahadev Mandir, is an ancient cave shrine situated along the seasonal Asan (Tons) riverbed in the Garhi Cantt military area of Dehradun. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this subterranean natural stone cave is one of the most venerated pilgrimage landmarks in Uttarakhand.
The temple is famously named after the Hindi word tapak (meaning to drip), referring to natural mineral rich spring water that perpetually drips drop by drop from the ceiling of the limestone cavern directly onto the sacred Shiva lingam.
According to Mahabharata tradition, this cave served as the historic meditation hermitage (Drona Guha) of Guru Dronacharya, the royal martial guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas. Here, his son Ashwatthama was born and fed divine celestial milk when his impoverished mother could not nurse him.
Devotees can explore adjacent shrines dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi, Lord Hanuman, and Santoshi Mata. A grand multi day fair (Tapkeshwar Mela) takes place every Maha Shivratri along the river banks.
