Dehradun was a part of the 'Kedar Khand', the region where Lord Shiva used to stay. It is also believed to be the same place where Lord Rama and his brother did their penance in order to kill the mighty Ravana. The city also marks the site where Guru Dronacharaya spent a year to fulfil his spiritual devotion. One of the oldest cities of India, Dehradun is today the capital of the state of Uttarakhand. Its geographical location is quite breathtaking as it is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, and is bordered by the Ganges and the Yamuna on the east and west, respectively.

Located in Doon Valley and cradled between the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, Dehradun is best remembered by the colonial-era buildings and museums left behind by the British. The sprawling Forest Research Institute Museum, the Indian Military Academy, the Survey of India Museum, Geology Museum and the Indian Institute of Petroleum are a few of the famous institutes and museums in Dehradun. Nestled among the green hills and often wrapped in a cool mist, is the Hanol Temple. The mysterious Robbers' Cave is sure to bring out the adventurer in you. The Tapkeshwar Temple, Great Stupa and Malsi Deer Park are the other attractions in Dehradun. This fascinating city also serves as a gateway to Rishikesh, Haridwar and Himachal Pradesh.

Day 1: Arrive Dehradun

Today on arrival in pick up from Dehradun Airport/Railway Station and proceed towards check in at hotel & relax, evening free for individual activities. Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 02: Dehradun Local Sightseeing

Today morning breakfast visit at FRI, Tapkeshwar mahadev temple, Buddha Temple, sahastradhara and Robbers cave. Later back to hotel, Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 03: Dehradun Dep.

Breakfast at hotel. Today at leisure check out from hotel, on arrival transfer to Airport / Railway station to catch your pre booked Flight / Train.

Dehradun has its own commercial airport, Jolly Grant Airport (Airport Code: DED), located 25 km southeast of the city center along the Rishikesh highway. By Train:

Dehradun Railway Station (Station Code: DDN) is the northern terminus of the Northern Railway zone, located right in the city center near the Prince Chowk intersection. Key daily superfast and express train connections include:

State-run UTC (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) Volvo AC buses, UPSRTC, and private luxury sleeper coaches operate round-the-clock from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate to Dehradun ISBT on Saharanpur Road. Dehradun is seamlessly connected to Mussoorie (34 km / 1 hr), Rishikesh (45 km / 1.2 hrs), Haridwar (52 km / 1.3 hrs), and Dhanaulti (60 km / 2 hrs).

1. Robber's Cave (Guchhupani) – Natural River Canyon

Located 8 km north of Dehradun city center near Anarwala village, Robber's Cave (Guchhupani) is a 600-meter-long natural limestone cave gorge. A subterranean stream flows through the narrow rock chasm, where crystal-clear icy mountain water suddenly disappears underground and reappears downstream. Visitors wade knee-deep through the shaded limestone canyon to reach a subterranean waterfall at the end. Local folklore says robbers used this secret gorge as a hideout during the British colonial era. Traveler Tip: Waterproof slippers and floaters are available on rent at the entry point for Rs. 30.

2. Sahastradhara – Sulphur Springs & Waterfalls

Situated 14 km northeast of Dehradun, Sahastradhara (meaning 'Thousand-fold Spring') is a renowned natural wonder where freshwater cascades over step-terraced limestone formations on the Baddi River. The water contains high concentrations of natural sulphur, celebrated for its therapeutic skin-healing benefits. A scenic ropeway / cable car carries visitors up to the hilltop amusement park and Shiva cave temple overlooking the valley. Private sulphur bath enclosures and freshwater bathing pools make it a favored family retreat.

3. Forest Research Institute (FRI) – Greco-Roman Masterpiece

Spanning an expansive 450-hectare estate along Chakrata Road, the Forest Research Institute (FRI) is a premier forestry research university and a National Heritage monument. Designed by C.G. Blomfield in 1929 in the grand Greco-Roman and Colonial Gothic style, its main plinth area is larger than Buckingham Palace. The estate houses six specialized forestry museums (Timber Museum, Silviculture, Non-Wood Forest Products, Pathology, Entomology, and Social Forestry) set amidst manicured lawns and botanical arboretums.

4. Mindrolling Monastery & Buddha Temple (Clement Town)

Located 10 km south in Clement Town, Mindrolling Monastery is one of the six major Nyingma lineage monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism. Established in 1965 by Khochhen Rinpoche, the monastery campus houses the world-famous Great Stupa (soaring 220 feet high with intricate wall frescoes depicting the life of Lord Buddha), an imposing 103-foot golden Buddha statue, landscaped Japanese-style zen gardens, and a peaceful Tibetan monastic university.

5. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Cave Temple

Resting 6 km from Dehradun on the banks of the seasonal Asan River (Tons Nadi), Tapkeshwar Temple is an ancient holy cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Water droplets continuously trickle from the limestone ceiling naturally onto the consecrated Shivling, giving the temple its name (Tapak meaning dripping). According to the epic Mahabharata, Guru Dronacharya performed deep penance in this subterranean cave.

6. Malsi Deer Park (Dehradun Zoo) – Rajpur Road

Situated 10 km from Dehradun on the foothills of the Mussoorie highway along Rajpur Road, Dehradun Zoo (formerly Malsi Deer Park) is a well-maintained mini-zoological park set amidst lush sal forests. It houses spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, leopards, nilgai, peacocks, emus, and a reptile conservatory, offering a delightful family excursion with children's adventure play zones and shaded walking trails.

7. Lachhiwala Nature Park (Nature Pools & Sal Forest)

Located 18 km from Dehradun along the Haridwar-Rishikesh Road, Lachhiwala Nature Park is a tranquil eco-tourism picnic destination fed by man-made streams from the Song River. Surrounded by towering Sal trees, the park offers natural freshwater bathing pools, birdwatching vantage points, musical fountains, and peaceful nature walks.

Standing tall at the heart of Dehradun's commercial crossroads, the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) is a celebrated hexagonal landmark inaugurated in 1953 by Lal Bahadur Shastri. Surrounding the Clock Tower lies the bustling Paltan Bazaar, famous for traditional Doon bakery goodies, spices, brass utensils, and authentic Garhwali street food.
