The Clock Tower, locally famous as Ghanta Ghar, is an iconic red brick civic monument standing at the historic crossroads in the center of Dehradun. Built to commemorate India Independence in 1948 and inaugurated by Railway Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1953, this 85 foot tall hexagonal tower is the signature landmark of Uttarakhand.
Unlike standard four sided clock towers, the Dehradun Clock Tower is uniquely engineered with six distinct faces (hexagonal structure). The clock mechanism and chiming bells were specially cast and imported from M/s Smith of Derby in England, historically designed so that their chime could be heard across the entire town valley.
The monument marks the junction where six major city thoroughfares converge: Rajpur Road, Paltan Bazar, Chakrata Road, Gandhi Road, Dispensary Road, and Subhash Road. The lively surrounding bazaar streets offer famous local bakeries, garment shops, and street food stalls.
The tower is brilliantly illuminated with dynamic LED floodlights after dusk. Visitors can explore the pedestrian shopping alleys of Paltan Bazar, famous for Dehradun basmati rice, woolens, and freshly baked rusks.
