Kalagarh Dam

Kalagarh Dam, formally named Ramganga Dam, is a massive earth and rock fill embankment dam constructed across the Ramganga River in the southwestern sector of Jim Corbett National Park. Built in 1974 for irrigation and hydroelectric power, the dam forms a vast 82 square kilometer water reservoir known as Ramganga Reservoir.

The reservoir lies entirely within the protected boundaries of Corbett Tiger Reserve. The expansive freshwater lake has created a flourishing wetland ecosystem that provides an indispensable lifeline for tigers, wild Asian elephants, and diverse wildlife.

Waterfowl Birdwatching, Gharials, and Elephant Herds

During the winter months, the reservoir turns into one of northern India's premier waterfowl refuges, welcoming thousands of migratory birds including bar headed geese, pintails, mallards, common pochards, and ospreys traveling along the Central Asian Flyway.

The quiet lake shores are home to healthy populations of fish eating gharials and marsh crocodiles basking on sunny sandy banks. Wild elephant herds regularly gather along the shallows to drink, bathe, and graze on freshwater reeds during afternoon hours.

Positioned along the scenic safari routes of Corbett, Kalagarh Dam offers a grand blend of engineering scale and wild nature across Uttarakhand.
