Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest and most prestigious national park, established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and later renamed in honor of legendary naturalist Jim Corbett. Spanning over 520 square kilometers of core tiger habitat (and 1,288 square kilometers across the greater Corbett Tiger Reserve), it occupies the sub Himalayan belt in Nainital and Pauri Garhwal districts.
Corbett holds the distinction of being the historic launch site of Project Tiger in 1973. Its diverse topography encompasses moist deciduous sal woodlands, rugged Shivalik hills, marshy riverine depressions, and the crystal waters of the Ramganga River.
The park boasts the highest tiger density in the world, with over 250 wild Royal Bengal tigers roaming the reserve. In addition, Corbett shelters large herds of Asian wild elephants, Indian leopards, sloth bears, sambar, hog deer, gharials, and marsh muggers.
Tourism is organized across six distinct safari zones: Dhikala (core grassland and canter zone), Bijrani (prime tiger tracking), Jhirna (year round open), Dhela, Durga Devi (ecotourism and mahseer rivers), and Garjiya. Birders can spot over 580 recorded bird species, making it one of the richest birding sites on earth.
Centered around the gateway town of Corbett, this sanctuary is the crown jewel of wildlife ecotourism across Uttarakhand.
