Tucked within a secluded alpine mountain bowl at an altitude of 1,500 meters in Almora district, Taragtal (Tadagtal Lake) is a unique natural freshwater lake located 10 kilometers from Chaukhutia in Uttarakhand. Spanning over two kilometers in length during full season, the lake is celebrated across Kumaon for its extraordinary ancient water engineering system consisting of sixteen underground rock tunnels (subterranean channels) carved beneath the lakebed.

Historical records attribute these subterranean drainage tunnels to the early Katyuri monarchs, who constructed the regulating sluices to channel overflow lake water underground to irrigate terraced paddy fields across the lower Ramganga valley. While several tunnels have naturally silted over centuries, five functional channels continue to drain water into subterranean mountain streams.
Encircled by untouched woodlands of cheer pine, oak, and rhododendron, Taragtal offers an uncommercialized wilderness retreat for hikers, birdwatchers, and campers seeking pristine nature away from crowded tourist towns.
