Kanatal is a small village located 78 Km ahead of the beautiful city, Dehradun in Uttarakhand. It is named after a lake, Kanatal, which used to be there. The region is surrounded with majestic hills as well as some famous hill stations like Mussoorie, Chamba and many others. This region is not so crowded and offers great peace of mind to the tourists who chose to come here.

This beautiful place is unlike other hill stations as it is well-connected with roads to different major cities including the national capital, Tourists can visit Kanatal anytime throughout the year as the place has a decent climate all year round. Walk through the lush meadows and the famous Kodia jungle, bring your food and plan a picnic under the mild warmth of the Sun or hire ponies to climb on the top of the hill - do anything and fill your heart with joy here.

Package Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun – Kanatal
Pick up from Dehradun Bus stand/ Railway station/ Air port and drop at Dhanaulti on arrival check in at hotel and over night stay hotel.

Day 2: Kanatal

After Morning breakfast visit sightseeing tour of Kanatal. You can visit a number of attractions located in and around this beautiful hill town. Head to visit the famous Kodia Jungle, which is the main tourist site situated here. you can also visit the Surkanda Devi Temple, which is surrounded by dense forests. Lying amidst a scenic setting, this shrine is dedicated to Goddess Sati – the female consort of Lord Shiva. Pay homage to the deity and also enjoy the stunning scenery of the surroundings visible from here with ease. As the day ends. back to hotel and over night stay hotel.

Day 3: Kanatal - Dehradun

After morning breakfast Check out from hotel and further transfer to Dehradun Railway station/ Bus stand / Airport.

How to reach Kanatal

By Air:

Jolly Grant Airport (Airport Code: DED - Dehradun - 85 km southwest) connects direct flights from New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. Taxis and private hill cabs are available at the airport arrivals to reach Kanatal in 2.5 to 3 hours via the Rishikesh Chamba or Dehradun Mussoorie highway.

By Train:

Kanatal is served by two major railway junctions in Uttarakhand:

  • Dehradun Railway Station (Station Code: DDN - 75 km): Connected by Vande Bharat Express, Shatabdi Express, and Mussoorie Express from New Delhi.
  • Rishikesh / Yog Nagari Rishikesh (Station Code: YNRK - 75 km): Major junction connecting trains from Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad.
  • Mountain taxis, shared jeeps, and rental self drive cars operate continuously from Dehradun and Rishikesh to Kanatal.

By Road:

  • From Delhi (~315 km / 6.5 to 7.5 hours): Via Delhi Dehradun Expressway or Delhi Meerut Roorkee Haridwar Rishikesh Chamba Kanatal route (NH-34).
  • From Mussoorie (~33 km / 1 hour): Via scenic Dhanaulti Kanatal Chamba mountain highway.
  • From Rishikesh (~75 km / 2.5 hours): Via smooth NH-34 winding through Narendra Nagar and Chamba.
  • Regular UTC state transport buses and shared hill jeeps depart from Dehradun ISBT, Mussoorie Picture Palace, and Rishikesh Natraj Chowk.

Local Transport:

Local mountain taxis and private vehicles are the best way to travel between Kanatal, Kaddukhal (Surkanda Devi), Kaudia Forest, Dhanaulti, and Tehri Dam.

1. Surkanda Devi Temple & 3,000-Meter Himalayan Summit Ropeway (Kaddukhal)

Perched atop a conical mountain summit at an altitude of 2,757 meters (9,045 feet) near Kaddukhal village (8 km from Kanatal), Surkanda Devi Temple is a revered Shakti Peeth where Goddess Sati's head (*sir*) is believed to have fallen. The temple offers a 360 degree panoramic view of snow capped Himalayan peaks and the Doon Valley. Visitors can reach the peak via a paved 2.5 km uphill trek through deodar woods or a 5-minute modern passenger ropeway.
