Perched upon a scenic hilltop overlooking the Western Ramganga River roughly 5 kilometers from Chaukhutia in Almora district, Lakhan Pur Temple (Lakhanpur Kot) is an ancient monument in Uttarakhand. Built in the eleventh century by the powerful Katyuri kings, the site originally served as a strategic military fortress and royal palace protecting the fertile agricultural valley of Rangor Ghati.
The temple complex is dedicated to Goddess Durga and Lord Shiva, featuring carved monolithic stone masonry, decorative doorways, and ancient water springs. Legend states that the royal Katyuri family performed state ceremonies and protective Vedic sacrifices at this mountain citadel.
Every year in October during Durga Ashtami and Navratri, the temple becomes the epicenter of the grand Lakhanpur Mela. Thousands of local Garhwali and Kumaoni villagers gather in traditional attire to offer animal sacrifices and brass bells, accompanied by lively Jhora Chanchari folk songs and drumbeats.
