Perched high atop a serene alpine mountain ridge at an elevation of 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) in Almora district, Pandukholi is a sacred cave shrine and meditation retreat located 27 kilometers from Chaukhutia and 10 kilometers from Dunagiri in Uttarakhand. Derived from 'Pandav Kholi' meaning the secret abode of the Pandavas, the mountain is revered as the refuge where the five Pandava brothers and Draupadi stayed in hiding during their period of secret exile (Agyatvas) in the Mahabharata epic.

The summit features ancient natural rock caves, a sacred perennial mountain spring, and the revered ashram of Mahant Balwant Giri Maharaj, who performed deep tapasya here. The hermitage maintains an eternal sacred fire (Dhuni) and offers simple herbal tea and accommodation for spiritual seekers.

The journey involves an invigorating 5 kilometer uphill forest hike starting from Kukuchhina through thick virgin forests of Himalayan oak, rhododendron, and deodar. The ridge crest opens onto expansive alpine meadows offering striking 360 degree panoramas of the snow ranges including Trishul, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and the valleys of Kumaon and Garhwal.

How to Reach Pandukholi

By Road / Trek: Located 27 km from Chaukhutia and 10 km from Dunagiri. Taxis reach Kukuchhina village roadhead, followed by a 5 km uphill mountain hiking trail (1.5 to 2 hours trek).
By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station (KGM) is 135 km south, connected via broad gauge express trains to Delhi and Lucknow.
By Air: Pantnagar Airport (170 km) operates regular scheduled domestic flights from Dehradun and New Delhi.
