The Garhwal Rifles War Memorial is an iconic military landmark and national tribute unveiled on Armistice Day, 11 November 1923, by Lord Rawlinson of Trent (Commander in Chief in India), situated at the edge of the historic Parade Ground in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand. Perched at an elevation of 1,700 meters, this solemn stone monument commemorates the supreme sacrifice of thousands of Garhwali soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty across worldwide military campaigns.
The centerpiece of the memorial is an imposing life sized bronze statue of a Garhwali rifleman standing in full World War I military combat uniform, mounted atop an elevated grey granite pedestal inscribed with the names of fallen martyrs. Overlooking the vast drill square of the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, the memorial is framed by majestic Himalayan deodar trees and pristine flowerbeds. Passing out parades of newly inducted young soldiers are conducted here with full military ceremonial honors.
