St Johns Church

St Johns Church is the only functioning church in the cantonment hill town of Lansdowne, situated on a peaceful forested hill spur along Mall Road in Uttarakhand. Originally conceptualized in 1934 and officially consecrated in 1936 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Agra, this colonial era stone sanctuary stands as an lasting symbol of British ecclesiastical architecture in the Garhwal hills.

Built with locally quarried grey slate and dressed hill stone, the church features classic European Gothic elements, including high vaulted timber ceilings, pointed arch portals, and luminous stained glass window panes. Surrounded by dense stands of blue pine and deodar trees, the tranquil courtyard provides a quiet great place for prayer and contemplation. Sunday mass services and special Christmas celebrations are held regularly, drawing local cantonment residents and visiting tourists.
