Tarkeshwar Mahadev

Tarkeshwar Mahadev is an ancient forest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, tucked amidst some of the thickest virgin deodar, pine, and oak groves in Uttarakhand, located approximately 38 kilometers from Lansdowne in Uttarakhand. Perched at a high altitude of 2,092 meters (6,863 feet) on a quiet mountain ridge, this sacred Siddha Peetha is believed to be where Lord Shiva rested after slaying the demon Tarakasura, granting the demon salvation (Moksha).

Unique among Himalayan shrines, the temple courtyard does not house a traditional stone lingam; instead, Lord Shiva is worshipped in a resting posture under sacred deodar trees. The temple complex is decorated with thousands of glistening brass bells, massive tridents (Trishul), and red holy cloths donated by grateful devotees whose prayers were answered. A natural freshwater kund (Gauri Kund) provides icy holy water for pre worship ablutions, while quiet stone paths through the deodar woods offer an exceptional environment for deep meditation.

Truth is, walking through the silent cedar forest while thousands of brass temple bells chime together in the crisp mountain wind is deeply spiritual. It remains one of the most serene wilderness pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand.
