Lord Lansdowne founded this hill station while he was the Viceroy of India (1888 – 1894). Lansdowne was developed by the British as the regimental center of the Garhwal Rifles. This place is home to various buildings and churches which were constructed during the Raj period. This place is also popular with tourists as a starting point for various adventurous activities which include trekking, paddling, boating, bird watching and more.

Lansdowne:- Lansdowne originally known as, Kaludanda, after Kalun (Black) and Danda (Hill) in local language, Lansdowne was founded and named after then Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne in 1887. Lansdowne was developed by the British for catering for the Recruits Training center of the Garhwal Rifles. Lansdowne was a major place of the activities of freedom fighters from British Garhwal during British period. Nowadays, the famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army has its command office here

By Air:

The nearest domestic airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (Airport Code: DED), situated approximately 148 km from Lansdowne (about 4.5 hours drive via Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Kotdwar). Regular flights connect Jolly Grant Airport to New Delhi (IGI), Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad. Alternatively, New Delhi International Airport (DEL) is 250 km away.

By Train:

Kotdwar Railway Station (Station Code: KTW) is the nearest railhead, located just 40 km from Lansdowne (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes drive via the scenic NH-534 hill highway). Prominent trains connecting Kotdwar include:

• Mussoorie Express (Train 14041/14042): Daily overnight express from Old Delhi Junction (DLI) to Kotdwar.
• Garhwal Express (Train 14044/14043): Daily direct daytime express from Delhi Sarai Rohilla (DEE) to Kotdwar.
• Taxis, shared jeeps, and state transport buses operate frequently between Kotdwar Station and Lansdowne.

By Road:

Lansdowne is the most accessible hill station from Delhi NCR with smooth, multi-lane expressway connectivity:

• From Delhi NCR (~250 km / 5.5 to 6 hours): Drive via Delhi-Meerut Expressway (NE-3), Meerut, Bijnor, Kiratpur, Najibabad, Kotdwar, Dugadda, and Lansdowne.

Perched on the highest cliff edge of Lansdowne (1.5 km from town center), Tip-in-Top (popularly known as Tiffin Top) is a spectacular natural viewpoint offering uninterrupted 180-degree panoramic vistas of the snow-clad Garhwal Himalayan range, including Chaukhamba and Trishul peaks. Surrounded by dense pine and oak trees, it is a serene spot for morning nature walks, sunrise photography, and peaceful picnics.

2. Bhulla Tal Lake & Eco Park (Army Maintained Pine Glade)

Dedicated to the young soldiers (Bhulla in Garhwali meaning younger brother) of the Garhwal Rifles who built it, Bhulla Tal is a tranquil artificial lake nestled amidst towering blue pine woods. Maintained with exemplary cleanliness by the Indian Army, visitors can enjoy paddle boating on emerald waters, stroll across wooden arched bridges, visit the children's amusement park, and relax at the lakeside eco-cafe.

3. Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple (Ancient Deodar-Enshrouded Shiva Shrine - 38 km)

Perched atop a hill at 2,092 meters (38 km from Lansdowne), Tarkeshwar Mahadev is an ancient 1,500-year-old Shiva shrine set within one of the densest and most majestic giant deodar cedar forests in Uttarakhand. Legend holds that demon Tarkasur meditated here to seek Lord Shiva's boon. The cool, deeply fragrant forest atmosphere filled with thousands of devotional brass bells offers an unforgettable spiritual retreat.

4. St. John's & St. Mary's Historic British Churches (1896 Colonial Heritage)

Built in 1934 on the Mall Road, St. John's Church is the only active Roman Catholic church in Lansdowne, featuring classical colonial brickwork, stained glass windows, and quiet pine gardens. Nearby stands St. Mary's Church (constructed in 1896), which has been converted by the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre into an audio-visual museum showcasing the pre-independence military history of Lansdowne.

5. Darwan Singh Sangrahalaya (Garhwal Rifles War Memorial & Museum)

Inaugurated in 1983 and named after Victoria Cross recipient Naik Darwan Singh Negi, this military museum near the Parade Ground displays rare war memorabilia, captured weapons from World War I and II, gallantry awards, portraits of war heroes, and historical uniforms tracing the valor of the Garhwal Rifles since 1887.

6. Hawaghar Ridge & Khyber Pass Nature Trail

Located near Tip-in-Top, Hawaghar is a breezy cliffside viewpoint overlooking the deep snow-capped valleys of the Himalayas. The famous Khyber Pass walking trail winds through thick oak and pine woods, offering tranquil bird watching and landscape vistas.

7. Santoshi Mata Temple & Sunset Point

Situated a short uphill walk above Tip-in-Top, Santoshi Mata Temple provides an open 360-degree panoramic vantage point where visitors gather to watch spectacular golden sunsets descending over the Shivalik hill ranges.

8. Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple (500-Year-Old Ancient Shrine)

The oldest temple in Lansdowne, Kaleshwar Mahadev is dedicated to Lord Shiva and served as a meditation hermitage for Sage Kalun for centuries before the town was established. Devotees and soldiers visit during Maha Shivratri to perform sacred rudrabhishekam.
