Rudranath Temple is a holy rock hewn cave sanctuary perched at an elevation of 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) inside dense rhododendron forests and high alpine meadows (bugyals) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Celebrated as the fourth shrine of the revered Panch Kedar circuit, this ancient stone temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, where his tranquil face (Mukh) is worshipped as Neelkanth Mahadev amidst the wilderness of the Garhwal Himalayas.

The temple is widely considered the most demanding among all Panch Kedar treks. A 20 km uphill trail starting from Sagar village near Gopeshwar traverses dense alpine forests, steep continuous ridges (such as Pitradhar pass), and the sprawling emerald pastures of Panar Bugyal. Pilgrims worship at sacred natural holy pools surrounding the cave, including Surya Kund, Chandra Kund, and Tara Kund, while taking in grand panoramic vistas of Mount Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Ghunti.

How to Reach Rudranath Temple

Rudranath Temple is reached via an adventurous 20 km mountain trek starting from Sagar village or Helang.

Trek Route: Drive 5 km from Gopeshwar to Sagar village. From Sagar, embark on the 20 km trek via Pun Bugyal, Luti Bugyal, and Panar Bugyal to reach the temple cave.
By Road: Gopeshwar is well connected by NH 07 via Chamoli (10 km). Regular buses and taxis run from Rishikesh (210 km) and Haridwar (235 km).
By Train & Air: Rishikesh railway station (210 km) and Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (225 km) offer the nearest transit connections.
