Robber's Cave (locally cherished as Guchhupani or Guchu Pani), tucked into the peaceful village of Anarwala just 8 km north of the Clock Tower in Dehradun in Uttarakhand, is one of Uttarakhand's most thrilling, unique, and geologically fascinating river gorge sanctuaries.
Carved over millennia through solid limestone rock by a rushing freshwater mountain stream, this 600 meter-long natural canyon narrows into soaring 10 meter-high vertical stone walls where visitors wade through knee deep crystal clear waters beneath a naturally air conditioned subterranean canopy.
It's the home of an intriguing disappearing river phenomenon where the mountain stream vanishes beneath subterranean limestone fissures only to gush back to the surface downstream, a roaring natural cave waterfall hidden deep within the gorge end, and colonial legends of 19th century dacoits who used these cavernous passages to evade British authorities.
It represents a rich geological adventure where refreshing Himalayan glacier fed springs, thrilling aquatic trekking, dramatic natural limestone formations, and delicious local Pahadi maggi stalls unite in the Doon Valley.
Located in Anarwala village, it sits 8 km north of central Dehradun, 9 km from Dehradun Railway Station (DDN), and 35 km from Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED), easily accessible by local Vikram auto (Route No. 1), city bus, or private cab.
During the British Raj in the 19th century, notorious local bandits, including the legendary dacoit Sultana Daku, discovered this hidden gorge and utilized it as their secret headquarters.
When British police pursued them into the gorge, the bandits would wade deep into the dark limestone chambers and vanish through secret subterranean water channels, re emerging safely in distant valleys of the Shivalik hills.
Truth is, the dramatic canyon walls block out the intense afternoon sun, keeping the water and air inside refreshingly cool even during the hottest summer months.
The Aquatic Gorge Trek: Trekkers rent colorful rubber slippers at the entrance and wade through clear, ankle to-knee deep flowing water between dramatic limestone cliffs that narrow to just two meters wide.
Vanishing River Mystery: Midway through the gorge, the flowing stream suddenly disappears into underground limestone chasms before springing back up through pebble beds several meters ahead, demonstrating a classic karst hydrological feature.
The Secret Waterfall: At the innermost end of the 600 meter cave lies a secluded natural cavern where a roaring 10 meter waterfall crashes into a natural rock plunge pool, providing an exhilarating natural shower for visitors.
Riverside Maggi & Chai: Outside the cave entrance, colorful wooden shacks and tables set directly inside the shallow stream allow visitors to sit with their feet in the cool running water while enjoying steaming bowls of butter maggi, crispy pakoras, and hot ginger tea.
After exploring Robber's Cave, take a short drive to the ancient riverside shrine of Tapkeshwar Temple, admire the Great Stupa at Mindrolling Monastery, or drive up the winding mountain highway to Mussoorie.
