Salal Dam and Lake

Salal Dam (officially known as the Salal Hydroelectric Power Station) is a massive run of the river engineering project built across the powerful Chenab River near Reasi, roughly ninety five kilometers north of Jammu city. Commissioned in 1987 by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), this monumental concrete rockfill gravity dam stands 113 meters high and generates 690 megawatts of clean electricity for northern India.

The construction of the dam created an expansive artificial reservoir lake that winds through deep mountain gorges beneath the rugged Shivalik hills. The turquoise waters of the reservoir contrasted against sheer limestone cliffs create a dramatic landscape popular with landscape photographers, engineers, and day trippers from Jammu and Katra.

During peak monsoon water release, opening the massive radial spillway gates creates an awe inspiring spectacle as thousands of cusecs of white water thunder down into the rocky gorge, throwing plumes of mist high into the valley air. Salal Dam represents one of India's most complex Himalayan engineering feats, overcoming highly faulted limestone strata through a unique curved spillway and deep underground powerhouse cavern. The plant supplies critical peaking power to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh through high voltage transmission grids.

Viewpoints, Security Guidelines & Visiting Tips

Visitors can view the dam and reservoir from designated public hilltop viewpoints along the Reasi Jyotipuram road from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Due to strategic security regulations, entry into the inner powerhouse and walking over the crest requires prior permission from NHPC authorities, and carrying government photo identification is compulsory.
