Akhnoor

Akhnoor is an ancient historical town situated on the right bank of the roaring Chenab River, approximately twenty eight kilometers northwest of Jammu city. Perched at the foothills of the Himalayan Shivalik ranges where the Chenab enters the northern plains, this heritage town possesses an extraordinary multi millennium history that spans Indus Valley Harappan settlements, early Buddhist monastic sites, and medieval Dogra fortifications.

The town is crowned by the monumental Akhnoor Fort, constructed in 1802 by Raja Alam Singh and completed by Maharaja Gulab Singh. Built atop an ancient Harappan archaeological mound on a high cliff terrace, the fort features massive perimeter walls, riverfront bastions, and royal residential quarters decorated with historic Dogri mural paintings. Directly below the fort lies the sacred Jia Pota Ghat, where on June 17, 1822, Maharaja Ranjit Singh performed the royal raj tilak ceremony crowning Gulab Singh as the Raja of Jammu under a historic Jia Pota tree.

A short distance away stands Ambaran, an internationally recognized 2nd century BCE to 7th century CE Buddhist monastery and stupa site excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India. Ambaran holds distinction as the northernmost Buddhist settlement excavated in India, having yielded terracotta heads, monastery cells, and ancient stupa relics. Pandava Gufa & Parashurama Temple Traditions

Akhnoor is also steeped in Mahabharata legend, historically identified with the ancient city of Virat Nagar where the Pandavas spent their period of exile (Agyatvas). Pilgrims visit the subterranean Pandava Gufa (cave shrine) and the riverbank Parashurama Temple, where annual religious ceremonies and cultural festivals are celebrated with great devotion.

Akhnoor Fort and Jia Pota Ghat are open to the public daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM with free entry. After touring the fort and riverbanks, visitors love heading into Akhnoor town market to taste famous spicy local street food, particularly crispy hot kachoris and ambal paired with kulchas.
