Raghunath Temple is one of northern India's largest and most sacred Hindu temple complexes, located right in the bustling heart of Jammu city. Commissioned in 1835 by Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder of the Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, and completed in 1860 by his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh, this monumental shrine is dedicated to Lord Rama (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) as the primary patron deity of the Dogra royal dynasty.

The temple complex consists of seven distinct shrines, each crowned by tall soaring shikharas decorated with glittering gold sheets. The central sanctum enshrines life sized idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana, while the inner sanctum walls are clad in three sides of solid gold plating. A unique feature of the outer corridors is the extraordinary collection of several lakh sacred Shiva lingams (saligrams) brought here from the Narmada River by Maharaja Ranbir Singh.
The complex also houses an ancient Sanskrit library preserving over six thousand rare palm leaf and birch bark manuscripts, serving as a classical center of Vedic and philosophical scholarship. Pilgrims heading toward Mata Vaishno Devi regularly begin their pilgrimage with darshan at this holy temple before exploring local bazaars across Jammu to shop for dry fruits, Dogra handicrafts, and traditional brassware.
Raghunath Temple is the epicenter of major Hindu festivals in Jammu. During Ram Navami in spring and Diwali in autumn, the entire complex is illuminated with thousands of earthen lamps (diyas) and electric lights. Grand religious processions carrying the royal palanquin of Lord Rama move through Raghunath Bazar amidst chanting and traditional Dogri drums.
The temple is open daily to devotees from 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM. Mangal Aarti takes place at 6:30 AM and Sandhya Aarti at 7:30 PM. Entry is completely free. Strict security measures are in place at the entrance gates; mobile phones, cameras, leather items, and electronic bags must be deposited in secure locker counters before entering.
