Krimchi

Krimchi (frequently known as the Pandava Temples of Krimchi) is an extraordinary group of ancient sandstone classical temples situated in the peaceful village of Krimchi in Udhampur district, roughly seventy five kilometers northeast of Jammu city. Dating between the 8th and 11th centuries CE, this protected monument complex represents one of the finest surviving examples of early medieval classical Nagara style rock temple architecture in the Jammu region.

The archaeological complex comprises seven distinct stone temples built on a raised masonry platform beside the murmuring Birunala stream. The largest temple, Temple No. 2, rises to an impressive height of over fifty feet with a beautifully contoured curvilinear shikhara decorated with intricate geometric carvings and floral motifs. Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the inner sanctums house carved stone lingams, alongside shrines honoring Lord Vishnu, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha.

Local historical lore strongly associates the temples with the five Pandava brothers, who are believed to have stayed here and founded the shrines during their long period of exile. Architectural historians note strong stylistic affinities with the classical Sun Temple of Martand in Kashmir and the medieval stone temples of Himachal Pradesh. Archaeological Survey of India Protection & Excavations

Maintained and preserved as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), extensive scientific excavations at Krimchi have unearthed ancient stone sculptures, bronze coins, and ornamental pottery dating back to the Kushan, Gupta, and early Dogra periods. The manicured green lawn surrounding the temples provides a tranquil setting for heritage walks.

Visiting Hours, Entry & Photography Guidelines

Krimchi Temple complex is open daily to tourists from sunrise to sunset (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Entry is completely free for all domestic and international visitors. Non commercial photography is permitted across the grounds, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring the stone platforms and stream banks.
