Dera Baba Banda

Dera Baba Banda (also revered as Dera Baba Banda Bahadur) is a three hundred year old major Sikh pilgrimage shrine situated along the scenic banks of the Chenab River in Reasi district, roughly seventy five kilometers north of Jammu city and twenty five kilometers from Katra. Established in the early 18th century by the legendary Sikh warrior and general Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, this historic gurdwara complex is the spiritual abode where he spent his final years in meditation and pastoral reflection.

The central sanctum of the gurdwara enshrines the holy Guru Granth Sahib alongside rare historical weapons, armory, and personal relics used by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur during his historic military campaigns against Mughal oppression. Among the preserved sacred items are his historic sword (khanda), long spear, steel bow, and ancient handwritten copies of Sikh scriptures. The gurdwara features traditional Sikh marble architecture, an expansive community dining hall (langar), and a sacred bathing sarovar fed by natural mountain springs.

Annual Vaisakhi Mela & Community Langar

During the annual festival of Vaisakhi in mid April, Dera Baba Banda becomes the center of a massive three day religious fair. Thousands of devotees from Punjab, Jammu, Delhi, and Haryana gather to participate in continuous Akhand Path recitations, devotional kirtan darbars, martial arts Gatka performances, and 24 hour community langars serving hot meals to all visitors.

Darshan Timings, Etiquette & Pilgrim Facilities

The gurdwara is open daily to people of all faiths from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Entry is completely free. In accordance with Sikh tradition, visitors must cover their heads with a scarf or rumal, remove footwear before entering the parikrama, wash their hands and feet, and refrain from carrying tobacco or alcohol into the complex premises.
