Bahu Fort is a three thousand year old historic citadel and sacred pilgrimage center standing prominently on a high rocky plateau on the left bank of the Tawi River in Jammu. Believed to have been originally founded by Raja Bahu Lochan, brother of Jammu's mythical founder Raja Jambu Lochan, this ancient fortress was substantially reconstructed and fortified with thick sandstone ramparts by the Dogra Maharajas in the 19th century.
The massive stone bastions of Bahu Fort and the terraced Mughal style lawns of Bagh e Bahu garden overlooking Jammu city.
Inside the massive fortified stone walls lies the highly revered temple of Bave Wali Mata (dedicated to Goddess Mahakali), who is worshipped as the presiding guardian deity of Jammu. Every Tuesday and Sunday, thousands of devotees climb the fort ramparts to offer prayers, red chunris, and traditional prasad to the deity. An ancient natural spring pool flows within the fortress courtyard, adding to the sacred atmosphere.
Surrounding the ancient fort is Bagh e Bahu, a terraced Mughal style garden featuring cascading illuminated fountains, wide flowerbeds, and India's largest underground aquatic fish aquarium. The fort ramparts offer unmatched panoramic views across the Tawi River, the old walled city of Jammu, and the distant snow peaks of the Pir Panjal mountains. Visiting this citadel is a defining travel highlight when touring heritage sites across Jammu, combining spiritual blessings with history.
The modern underground fish aquarium at Bagh e Bahu is designed in the shape of a massive fish, containing twenty four freshwater and marine tanks housing rare species including piranhas, red bellied gouramis, and anemones. The beautifully landscaped terrace garden features musical water fountains, walking paths, and peaceful picnic lawns overlooking Jammu city.
During Chaitra Navratri and Ashwin Navratri (March/April and September/October), the temple hosts the vibrant Bahu Mela. Tens of thousands of pilgrims visit for darshan and enjoy traditional Dogri fairs. The fort and garden are open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM with nominal garden entry fees of 20 rupees for adults and 10 rupees for children.
