Amar Mahal

Amar Mahal Palace (now preserved as the Amar Mahal Museum and Library) is a 19th century French chateau style royal palace built on a hilltop overlooking the Tawi River valley in Jammu. Built in the 1890s by Raja Amar Singh, a prominent Dogra ruler, this red sandstone historic landmark was designed by a French architect to resemble a grand European castle with sloping roofs, tall turrets, and ornate triangular gables.

The palace was the last official residence of the Dogra royal dynasty before being converted into a public heritage museum by Dr. Karan Singh and his family through the Hari Tara Charitable Trust. The grand centerpiece of the museum is the priceless 120 kg solid gold throne (Golden Throne) of the Dogra Maharajas, decorated with hexagonal lions and velvet cushioning, displayed in a high security hexagonal gallery.

The museum also houses the Maharaja's personal library containing over twenty five thousand rare volumes covering literature, statecraft, philosophy, and history. Art galleries within the palace display exquisite collections of Kangra miniature paintings based on the poet Jaidev's Gita Govinda, family portraits of the Dogra kings, and contemporary modern Indian art. Golden Throne & Kangra Miniature Art Collection

The 120 kg pure gold throne of Maharaja Gulab Singh is considered one of India's most valuable royal artifacts. Surrounding art galleries showcase 18th century Kangra miniature paintings painted with natural vegetable and mineral pigments, detailing romantic verses of Radha and Krishna with delicate brushwork.

Museum Timings, Entry Fees & Garden Walks

Amar Mahal Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (closed on Mondays and national holidays). Entry ticket costs 20 rupees for adults and 10 rupees for children. The sprawling manicured lawns overlooking the river valley provide a serene atmosphere for evening relaxation.
