Mansar Lake is an expansive, sacred freshwater lake situated sixty two kilometers east of Jammu city in Samba and Udhampur districts. Fringed by forest covered hills of the lower Shivalik range, this scenic lake stretches over one mile in length and half a mile in width, holding international recognition as a Ramsar Wetland of international importance due to its rich aquatic ecology and biodiversity.
The tranquil waters, paved walking promenade, and dense pine hills surrounding sacred Mansar Lake near Jammu.
Mansar holds profound religious sanctity in Hindu mythology, sharing spiritual reverence on par with Lake Mansarovar in Tibet. On the eastern shore stands the ancient shrine of Sheshnag (a multi headed serpent god). Newly married couples perform parikrama (circumambulation) around the entire four kilometer paved lake promenade to seek lifelong marital harmony, while parents bring newborn male children for their traditional mundan (first hair cutting) ceremonies.
Beyond its spiritual importance, Mansar Lake is home to a wildlife sanctuary sheltering rare freshwater turtles (Trionyx gangeticus and Lissemys punctata), giant carps, spotted deer, and thousands of migratory ducks wintering in the reed marshes. Boating facilities operated by JKTDC, lakeside botanical gardens, and open viewpoints make it a favored holiday resort when exploring scenic destinations across Jammu and Surinsar.
Travelers can hire pedal boats and motorboats for 200 to 400 rupees per ride to glide past sunbathing freshwater turtles and feed hundreds of harmless carps swimming near the ghats. The 4 km paved track around the water is ideal for peaceful morning jogging, cycling, and birdwatching amidst chirping waterfowl and kingfishers.
During Baisakhi in mid April, the lake hosts the vibrant Mansar Mela organized by Jammu Tourism, featuring Dogri folk dances, rural sports, and local culinary stalls. Mansar forms a popular tourist circuit with its twin sister lake, Surinsar Lake, located just twenty four kilometers away via scenic hill bypass roads.
