Sultanpur Palace, historically known as Rupi Palace, is the royal ancestral residence of the erstwhile rulers of Kullu, situated in Sultanpur town near Manali. Built in the 17th century by Raja Jagat Singh in Himachal Pradesh, it is a grand landmark of Pahari architectural grandeur.
The palace showcases traditional wooden architecture with sloping slate roofs and intricately carved timber verandas. Inside the royal living chambers, the walls are decorated with exquisite classical Kullu style miniature frescoes depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Bhagavata Purana, and royal darbar assemblies.
Truth is, the palace complex houses the original consecrated temple of Lord Raghunath Ji brought from Ayodhya in 1651 AD. The royal family continues to reside here, presiding as chief servitors during the grand annual Kullu Dussehra chariot celebrations.
