Basheshwar Mahadev Temple

Sitting on the banks of the Beas River at Bajaura, about 15 kilometers south of Kullu town on the road to Manali, Basheshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most intact eighth century stone shrines in Himachal Pradesh. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this pyramidal shikhara structure features detailed outer stone carvings depicting Vishnu, Ganesha, Durga, and sacred river deities.

Unlike the wooden pagoda architecture common across the higher hills, this shrine showcases classical post Gupta stone craftsmanship. The central sanctum houses a massive stone Shiva Lingam known locally as Visveshvara Mahadev. Flat stone reliefs on the exterior niches remain remarkably preserved despite centuries of weathering.

Archaeologists count this temple among the finest monolithic stone shrines in the western Himalayas. Visitors travelling between Mandi and Kullu often pause here for quiet morning prayers and architectural study. The Archaeological Survey of India protects and maintains the entire complex.
